Why We Care

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF SAFE & HAPPY FAMILY?

We are a family on a mission to help others live safer and happier lives. As a family with severe food allergies and celiac disease, we believe in the importance of focusing on joy, nutrition, fitness, and faith.  We believe that a safe family is a happy family!!!

WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH ABOUT FOOD ALLERGIES?

Food allergies are an emerging epidemic and our son is one of those affected. Read more about us on the “about” page and his food allergy story here.

ARE YOU ALL PHYSICIANS?

No, we just play them on TV. (Or not.) Seriously though, we have absolutely no medical training aside from a few CPR classes. We are parents who care deeply about educating ourselves and others about food allergies and celiac disease and keeping our family safe. Please seek the input of a physician and do not consider any of our ramblings to be medical advice.

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE WITH CELIAC DISEASE?

Holly (aka- mommy) was diagnosed with celiac disease in mid-2015 after a decade of health issues and spontaneous fractures. While we had a few years experience with avoiding allergens because of our little dude, educating ourselves about living completely gluten-free has been a HUGE adjustment. We’ll be the first to admit that we’re still figuring it out!

Food Allergy Resources

ARE FOOD ALLERGIES THE SAME AS INTOLERANCES?

Not at all. Food allergies involve the immune system and can be life-threatening. Food intolerances affect the digestive system and can not cause anaphylaxis – they just make you feel uncomfortable. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology has a great handout on the differences, which you may view here.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO HELP FIND A CURE FOR FOOD ALLERGIES?

We support food allergy research by donating to the non-profit FARE. We sponsor the National Food Allergy Conference and regularly donate products to FARE Walks and support group raffles as well.

MY CHILD HAS BEEN RECENTLY DIAGNOSED WITH FOOD ALLERGIES. I’M COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED AND HAVE NO  IDEA WHERE TO START…

Celiac Disease Resources

WHAT IS CELIAC DISEASE?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the digestive processes of the small intestine. Those affected by celiac are unable to consume even small amounts of gluten and are required to adhere to a lifelong diet restricting gluten-containing foods. If left untreated, celiac disease may result in malnourishment, osteopenia/osteoporosis, and many other complications.

IS CELIAC DISEASE THE SAME AS FOOD ALLERGIES?

Not at all. Our smart friends at FARE compared and contrasted the two conditions  here. In summary,

“A food allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a specific food protein. When the food protein is ingested, it can trigger an allergic reaction that may include a range of symptoms from mild symptoms (rashes, hives, itching, swelling, etc.) to severe symptoms (trouble breathing, wheezing, loss of consciousness, etc.). A food allergy can be potentially fatal.

Celiac disease (also known as celiac sprue), which affects the small intestine, is caused by an abnormal immune reaction to gluten. Usually diagnosed by a gastroenterologist, it is a digestive disease that can cause serious complications, including malnutrition and intestinal damage, if left untreated. Individuals with celiac disease must avoid gluten, found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats.”

HOW ARE CELIAC DISEASE AND FOOD ALLERGIES SIMILAR?

What celiac disease and food allergies have in common is the management. While celiac disease can not cause anaphylaxis, those with the disease are required to strictly avoid gluten for their entire life. With celiac disease, even a small amount of gluten is enough to trigger an auto-immune response. In both, label reading is imperative, as is strict avoidance to even trace amounts.

IF I’M GLUTEN SENSITIVE, DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE CELIAC DISEASE?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that requires diagnosis by an experienced physician. The University of Chicago Celiac Center answers questions on this topic here.
